Some History On Bread Boxes, And Why I Use Them

May 18, 2010

There are a million different tools you need in the kitchen. Because of the sheer amount of things you need, you probably don't even have half of them. Some of them are more important than others, and some of them are almost just there purely for decoration. One of my new favorite kitchen utensils is a bread box. Bread boxes used to be very important, but now they have become almost obsolete. They are still useful, but they aren't necessary like they used to be in the old days.

The purpose of bread boxes to keep bread and other baked goods fresh. Bread boxes were found in almost every home years ago. They were necessary because bread didn't have preservatives in it, and there was no refrigeration to keep the bread fresh. A long time ago bread would go bad very quickly, and having a bread box meant you could save a ton of money (and bread).

Bread boxes are still used to this day, but just not as much. Bread already comes in plastic packaging, so there isn't much use for a little bin to store it all in when the plastic does a fine job of keeping it fresh. Still, a lot of people prefer bread boxes to other things. Bread boxes are especially important for people that still bake bread and other confectionery sweets.

Over time the design of bread boxes has changed greatly. Originally most bread boxes were made out of wood, and now most bread boxes are made out of metal. Most old wooden bread boxes can be considered collectible antiques. Older bread boxes are often bigger too, because they had to store all kinds of bread they had then. Older bread boxes also had handcrafted designs, and now most of them are mass produced and have the same designs. Even if you have a modern bread box you probably won't have to store everything in it, so the size can be considerably smaller.

I enjoy having a bread box, because it gives me kitchen a nice, cozy environment. I also love enjoying fresh bread from the bakery, as well as baking my own bread. From experience, it seems a bread box will keep the bread fresher and tastier than a cupboard or other methods of storage. Bread boxes are very cheap, so don't be hesitant about trying one out or borrowing one from a friend.

My Review Of The Polder Deluxe Steel Bread Box

May 16, 2010

Baking is currently a new hobby I recently picked up. One of my biggest problems with baking is keeping certain goods fresh for long periods of time. I love to bake bread, but bread doesn't stay fresh for a long period of time when it is homemade. When you buy bread from the store, it is packed with preservatives and put into a plastic bag to protect it, but neither of those are available when I make bread at home. So I figured I'd buy an old-fashioned bread box to see if it would solve my problem. I bought a Polder Deluxe Steel Bread Box.

Bread boxes are something that my grandparents actually used. They are very old, but they still have practical uses to this day. You can store homemade bread, pies, cookies, cakes, muffins, and many other confectionery goods in bread boxes. The Polder Deluxe bread box is just like an old-fashioned bread box. Most newer bread boxes have a newer style, but this bread box keeps true to its ancient roots. The only difference is that it is made out of superior materials and has a superior design to keep your food fresh.

The bread box comes in a couple of different colors, so there is surely something that will match your kitchen. It is available in white, cobalt blue, and stainless steel. The paint shines beautifully, and to top it off the paint is chip resistant. The bread box is family sized, and even with all of the goods I made I never ran out of space. It is made out of steel, so it will also last for a very long time.

The features of the Polder Deluxe Steel Bread Box are simply amazing (for a box). The box is designed to let just enough air in to keep the bread crisp, but not so much that it will go bad. The roll-top door to it opens very easily and secures tightly. It also has a protective plastic trim around it to ensure that it won't be broken very easily. The thing that I liked most about this bread box that it was only priced at 25 dollars. I found similar bread boxes priced at over twice as much.

The Polder Deluxe Steel Bread Box is great for anybody that likes to bake his or her own homemade goods. Even if you don't, it makes your kitchen look wonderful, and you can still store store-bought goods in it. It does a great job keeping your baked goods fresh. It is a wonderful bread box, and it goes to show that sometimes the classic is still the best.

Why I Decided to Start Using Bread Boxes

May 09, 2010

For as long as I can remember, I stored bread either in my cupboard or my fridge. In the short term, a cupboard was always a great solution, but if I left it there for a week or two it would almost always go bad. If I needed to store bread for a long time, such as when I'm not in the mood to eat it regularly, I would put it in the fridge to prevent mold from growing. Unfortunately, the tradeoff is that the bread becomes dry, stale, and not very good.

After some research, I came across bread boxes, which are used (surprise!), for storing bread. A bread box is meant to provide a cool, dry, and fairly air-tight environment to keep the bread optimally fresh. It was definitely a step up from my cupboards, which are occasionally hit by roaches, and my fridge, which degrades the taste of the bread significantly.

As someone with a taste for trying out fresh hand-made loaves of bread, I think bread boxes are a perfect storage solution. I haven't used one long enough to compare the differences between storing in a cupboard, but I definitely see the merits in using one. I no longer worry about pests getting at the bread and lately I've always managed to finish the bread before it gets attacked by mold. Considering the low price of a decent bread box, I find it to be a pretty worthwhile investment.

Just as a recap, if you like to buy fresh loaves of bread from the bakery as compared to the processed bread common to grocery stores, a bread box should do a good job maintaining bread quality over time. I'll try to keep this site updated. Soon, I'll write a more detailed review of the one bread box I have. By then, I should have a good enough idea of how storing bread in bread boxes compares to the more common methods people use.
